Allah SWT the most gracious and merciful has blessed every individual with numerous qualities. He has also placed in his body cupping2requirements to maintain his physical health. To satisfy these needs he has created many plants, trees, herbs which help in health and disease. Allah SWT and His Blessed Prophet SAW are wiser than all the physicians of the world. Blessed and wise is the person who can benefit from this wisdom.

No-one can compete with the spiritual or physical powers of Rasoolallah SAW. Spiritually he is the leader of all the prophets and physically he defeated the strongest wrestler of his times.

He has advised us that the best treatment is Hijamah.  Shahih Bukhari contains five chapters for Hijamah. This does not mean that we will not use any other form of therapy because Rasoolallah SAW has said that Allah SWT has not sent any disease that has also sent a cure for it.

  • Ibn ‘Abaas RA narrates that the Prophet SAW said:

“Healing is in three things:

  1. In the cutting edge of the blade (used for Hijamah).
  2. In a drink of honey
  3. In branding with iron

However I forbid my Ummah from branding with iron” (Al-Bukhari , Altib 5781)

  • Anas RA narrates that the Messenger of Allah SAW said: “The ideal cure is Hijamah and Al-Qist Al-Bahri(which is a marine herb)”. (Al-Bukhari , Altib 5797).

  • Jabir Ibn Abdullah RA narrates that he visited Al-Muqanna’, who was ill and said to him, “I will not leave until you get yourself cupped, for I have heard the Prophet SAW saying there is healing in Hijamah”. (Al-Bukhari , Altib 5797)

  • Samura bin Jundub RA narrates that a bedouin from Banu Fazarah came to the Prophet SAW and found him being cupped with the aid of horns. When the Hajjam struck the Prophet SAW with a blade, the bedouin asked (in surprise): “What is this that you are doing O Prophet of Allah.” He (SAW) replied “This is Hijamah which is the best thing people treat themselves with” (Al-Nisai-and-Ahmed 20094).

  • Malik bin Sa’sa’ah RA narrates that the Messenger of Allah SAW said: “On the night of my ascent to the heavens (Meraj), I never passed by a company of angels, except that they exhorted me to practice hijamah by way of treatment.” (Ala Shartul Shaikhain)

  • Tirmidhi narrates another hadith to the same effect from Abdullah bin Masood RA, which is as follows: Abdullah bin Masood RA narrates that the Messenger of Allah SAW spoke about his ascent to the heavens saying: “I did not pass by a single company of angels except that they exhorted me to command my Ummah to practice Hijamah” (Al-Tirmizi: 2062)

  • Ibn Abbas RA narrates that the Prophet of Allah SAW said: What a good person is the Hajjam (ie the one who does Hijamah) who sucks out blood, lightens the back and sharpens the vision”. He also said that: “When the Messenger of Allah SAW was taken to the heavens (on the night of Mairaj) he SAW did not pass by a single company of Angels except that they said: “You must practice Hijamah”(Al-Tirmizi: 2053)

  • Abu Hurairah RA narrates that the Prophet SAW said: “If there is any good in anything that you treat yourselves with, then it is Hijamah” Ibn-e-Majah: 3476)

  • Abdul Rahman Ibn Abi An’am RA narrates: I went to Abu Hurairah RA while he was getting cupped. He said to me : O Abdul Hakam! Get yourself cupped.” I said: “I have never had cupping done.” He said: Abul Qasim (SAW) said to me: “Hijamah is the best thing people treat themselves with” (Ala Shartul Shaikhain)

  • Abu Hurairah RA narrates that the Messenger of Allah SAW said: “Whoever has Hijamah done of the 17th of the lunar month, will be cured of every disease”. (Ala Shartul Shaikhain)

  • Ibn Abbas RA is reported to have said: “The best dates of Hijamah are the 17, 19 and 21 (of the lunar month)”. Sahih Al-Jama : 2066)

  • Ibn Abbas RA narrates that the Prophet SAW had Hijamah done while fasting.
