Hijama in Nigeria by Yusuf Mikail

PLEASE GIVE US A SHORT INTRODUCTION ABOUT YOURSELF, AND IN PARTICULAR HOW YOU ENDED UPNigeria BEING A HIJAMA THERAPIST

I am Yusuf  Mikail, an expert in prophetic medicine, hijaamah and ruqyah. The endless journey into the world of prophetic medicine started years back with a sheikh who introduced me into the art of cupping and some prophetic medicines, majorly black seed oil, olive oil, vinegar etc. Coincidentally at that time, I was battling a chronic malaria and typhoid fever, moving from one hospital to another with marginal or no improvement at all. I resorted to cupping and prophetic medicine and there I was, after few weeks, very much better. Alhamdulillah.

Being a voracious reader, I began to read all available texts, both in Arabic and English on hijamah and prophetic medicine. It was so fascinating a field! My field as a science student having studied science laboratory technology in the polytechnic and zoology in the university, I was able to explore beyond imagination. The authentic hadeeth in bukhari and muslim about the potency of camel`s milk and urine has been confirmed by my series of testimonies from patients.

WHAT PARTICULAR ILLNESSES/CONDITIONS (IF ANY) DO YOU SPECIALISE/ HAD THE MOST EXPERIENCE IN?

The Holistic nature of prophetic medicine and hijaamah have always marveled me. I treat a wide range of illnesses ranging from chronic back pain, insomnia, hypertension to jinn possession, black magic, infertility, tuberculosis, menstrual issues among others.

However, Ive recorded tremendous success in the treatment of most respiratory diseases like tuberculosis, asthma, whooping cough, as well as hormonal imbalances, low sperm count, azoospermia, migraines and most spiritual problems. I treat with a combination of hijaamah, prophetic medicines and Islamic supplications.

AND DO YOU FIND THAT IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, THE CONDITIONS/ILLNESSES THAT YOU HAVE COME ACROSS RESPOND WELL TO CUPPING(HIJAMA) THERAPY? AND IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY?

Of all the cases I attend to on daily basis, cupping benefits mostly those battling pains, migraines, male and female reproductive issues like low sperm count, azoospermia, absence of menstrual flow over a period of time, migraines. Also, cupping helps my patients control weight, treats insomnia and especially lower blood pressure and control hypertension. In all of these cases, my patients have responded well and benefitted in no small way.

DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERESTING CASE STUDIES THAT YOU CAN BRIEFLY SHARE WITH US FROM YPUR HIJAMA TREATMENTS?

Of course.

One of my patients was diagnosed of azoospermia. After years of various treatments, all to no avail. He came to our centre and was cupped at strategic points twice over a period of one month. I also prepared some prophetic medicines for him alongside, the medicines majorly comprise of fenugreek, black seed, ginger, garlic and others. After the first month, he performed another test which revealed oligospermia. After another two months of cupping therapy and prophetic medicine, the results were superb. The sperm count is above normal.

A patient complained of severe back pain and distorted night sleep with recurrent headaches. He was cupped once and the pain vanished.

Another patient has this to say:

“Alhamdulillah, I can`t thank you enough. Your wealth of knowledge and experience in cupping therapy and Islamic herbs has almost made me prefer you above your mates. I will forever continue to recommend you. Keep on with the good job….”

A 50 year old man was diagnosed of diabetes and hypertension, he also had a wound that has refused to heal for months. Having spent about a month in the hospital with no significant change, he almost lost hope when we met. All attempt to convince him prove abortive as he was just sure he would die soon.

Reluctantly, he took some prophetic medicines, majorly camel`s milk, black seed oil and fenugreek oil. His excess urine reduced drastically before the next day and after a while, we fixed a cupping appointment for him…. After about two months, he remarked “I want to go back to my work, I`m totally ok” I burst into laughter!

ALSO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT USING CUPPING AS A GENERAL PREVENTIVE THERAPY AND HOW OFTEN WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS (ONCE A MONTH? ONCE/TWICE A YEAR?)

Yes, I strongly recommend cupping as a general preventive therapy for many crucial reasons. One, research has shown that most diseases affecting us are as a result of free radicals in the body and cupping remains a sure way of getting rid of the free radicals. The one who have him/herself cupped occasionally is not likely to fall sick, especially of deadly diseases like diabetes, cancer, hypertension and others. The fact that cupping also purifies the blood, aid circulation and boost immunity is enough a reason to advocate for its wide acceptance. About 70% of diseases are associated with the blood.

The frequency of when cupping is to be done depends on a number of factors, among which are the health status of the individual, their age and sex. Sequel to this, there is curative cupping and also therapeutic cupping. The latter can be done once every four month while the former depends on the health condition for which it is to be performed.

AS A HIJAMA THEARAPIST, HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET HIJAMA DONE YOURSELF, AND WHAT FOR (IF ANY SPECIFIC CONDITION) AND WHO DO YOU GO TO TO GET IT DONE (SINCE IT IS NOT AN EASY THERAPY TO SELF-ADMINISTER)?

I get myself cupped four times a year. My wife either does it for me or a friend. This is because I take enough fruits, vegetables and water. I strictly watch my diet and abstain from both mental and physical stress, stress compromises the immune system! Most people are oblivious of this fact.

I must say this “the body gets natural healing when natural foods are consumed in their natural forms”. So, I abstain as much as possible from bread, fruit juice, canned foods and over-processed products, all of which are toxic to the body.

WHAT IS THE STATUS AND OVERALL PREVALENCE OF HIJAMA THERAPY IN NIGERIA? IS IT AVAILABLE IN HOSPITALS AND CLINICS AS A VALID ALTERNATIVE / SUNNAH THERAPY?

Hijaamah is practiced in the northern and south-west of Nigeria, although not fully known. It is also not recognized in hospitals but the government allowed it as a valid alternative or Islamic therapy.

We practice it individually, there are hijaamah centres around the country, though still very few. In the eastern part of the country, it is hardly known, as the east is dominated by non-muslims.

Yes, I would advise all therapists to continue creating awareness and learning more about this field.
