CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

AIM OF THE INTERNATIONAL CUPPING SOCIETY

Over the years having met distinguished scholars in the field of Hijamah (Cupping), I came to the realisation that their work was not being recognised by conventional or western medicine, and that patients all over the globe were not aware of this treatment option. The clinical results that their patients have been benefiting from are hidden. As such we decided to form the ICS to bring members from all over the world regardless of race or religion, so that we could all work in conjunction with each other and take this medicine forward. I no longer call it a complementary or alternative medicine; too many patients have been suffering for years on heavy doses of medications suffering from their side effects and not gaining much benefit. Many of our patients turned to cupping as a last resort but now wished that their routing general medical practitioner had offered this option to them at the beginning.

Only by the education of doctors throughout the world can patients be fully informed of this medical treatment. As such, I call on all of you to work with us. This Endeavour will never succeed by the work of a few. It takes great numbers of us to work together with true conviction and passion.

Think of it very simplistically. Have you or any of your loved ones ever suffered severe pain? Then imagine a simple, relatively cheap method of medical treatment that could be accessed by those throughout the world, to relieve them of this pain you have felt, or witnessed. Is it not worth your little effort to help mankind? We also should aim to safeguard this ancient practice. Therefore, education of those practising wet cupping is essential and, as such, formal training pathways need to evolve to implement strict infection control procedures as well as procedures to safeguard patients from those only interested in financial gains and not their well-being. We call on all practitioners, all teachers and all leaders in this field, to join us, work with us and let us take this treatment to the world. It should no longer be hidden in the closet and we should not be afraid or ashamed of it. We call on governments to assist us in research in this field. God willing, we can succeed with our effort and His Guidance.

Peace unto all mankind

Dr. M. Ravalia

Hijamah for Women at Moins Wellbeing Centre in Leicester.

Hijamah for Women at Moins Wellbeing Centre in Leicester.

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Hafsa Omar - a female cupping therapist based in Leicester, England, and it is an update to her earlier post of 20 March, 2009 entitled : Female Hijama Therapist now available in Leicester! .

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Hafsa Omar and I currently practice Hijamah therapy for women in Leicester. I have been practising now for about two years mainly in Leicester although I have done outside clinics. I became interested in Hijamah a few years ago. A friend of mine who is a practising Accupunctrist in London has done cupping (dry) on me since my teens. I always found it beneficial and was amazed at the results when she treated me with hijamah for a problem I had that nothing else seemed to cure.

What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

I wouldnt say I specialise in anything in particular but experience shows me that certain conditions/illnesses respond better to hijamah therapy. For instance menstrual problems respond well as well as digestion and stomach problems. Headaches and migraines also respond well, sometimes only needing one treatment. Hijamah is very good for pain related conditions such as backache, neck and shoulder pain, leg pain.

And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Many illness and conditions respond well to hijamah. Pain related conditions are usually very effective such as back, neck and shoulder pain. Sciatica, skin conditions such as eczema, skin rashes, acne and digestive problems. Menstrual problems such as delayed, heavy or painful periods respond extremely well but usually a few treatments are needed before benefits can be seen.

Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

I would definetly recommend hijamah as a preventative therapy. Its an excellant way of ridding the body of toxins and helping to keep you generally healthy. Id say the benefits of hijamah are not always immediate. Sometimes it can take months to notice any benefits or change in health.

As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I try and have hijamah done every month on the sunnah day as a general preventative measure. Alhamdullilah I dont have any health problems but I have still noticed a difference in my well being since having hijamah. Dr Aaliyah in Birmingham has done it on me a few times and I also have a friend who does it for me although its not always easy as sunnah days are usually very busy Alhamdullilah, thats it hard to find the time to do it.

Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located in Leicester?

I currently practice Hijamah for Women at Moin's Chemist and Wellbeing Centre, 137a East Park Rd, Leicester, LE5 5AZ. Tel: 0116 255 8653. Any sisters interested in having hijamah or would like some more information can contact me on the number above.

Hijama for the treatment for severe migraines by Br Misbah Ali

Hijama for the treatment for severe migraines

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Br Misbah Ali about his experience of hijama therapy in London, England.

- What condition did you suffer from (if any)?

Severe migranes, drowsiness and fatigue, likely from seher, as was suffering from it during that time.

- What other treatment did you try before trying hijama therapy?

I had tests etc. from doctors, everything seemed ok to them, prescribed me with all these different types of medicine from tablets to little wafers you stick on the tongue and once dissolved apparently help with migraines (they didn't work by the way!)

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?

I live in East London, Newham and I got my hijama done privately from a brother who used to practice hijama on in East London, but he isn't there no more.

- What did the treatment involve?

It involved me being in a room and had to expose my back to apply the cups, I also had cups placed on my neck, in total I think I had about 5-6 cups applied in 1 session, it was a nice experience as I had all these cups applied to me and I looked like a robot (LOL) while I was waiting for the blood etc me and the brother had some nice Islamic discussions and I wasn't even bothered about the cupping blood etc.

- What was the result?

Mashaallah as soon as the treatment was over and he applied antiseptic cream Alhamdullilah it was like all my ailments washed away with the blood that came out of me, I was a bit light headed but I could just tell the migraines and other illnesses were gone Alhamdullilah.

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and his practice?

Hmmm honestly I think the place I performed it at would have failed western health and safety practices but honestly I thought it was ok and I didnt mind getting it done there, the brother Mashaallah was very nice and understood it was my first time so explained EVERY part of the procedure before he done it. Before he makes tiny little cuts on you he told me 'bro this might hurt a little but if it's too much let me know and I will stop' but to be honest 1. I wasn't even scared and 2. They didn't even hurt more like someone placing a pen on your neck and the drawing a line

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course he attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?

I think he was taught by someone in Yemen or something I cant exactly remember but I know it wasn't at a course or anything. But to be honest I don't really care where he was taught it as long as he did it right and mashallah he did.
